Why is it “The Original?” Because origins matter. Yoga has a terroir, just like a fine wine or tea. I grew up in North Oaks, lived abroad for 10 years, then, against all odds, came back. When I returned in 2003, there were no yoga or meditation classes offered anywhere–at least not like the ones I had experienced in Singapore and Japan.
I soaked up the Zen Buddhist teachings of my first Yoga Instructor and my “Japanese Mom,” integrating them over time into a wellness lifestyle ( as opposed to a religion). When I arrived back in the States, I trained at the most credible, residential yoga center I could find, Kripalu in Western Massachusetts. I also spent several weeks a year in the unique indie yoga environment of Santa Barbara, CA. Over time, contradiction and confusion coalesced with my natural habitat, North Oaks into something that was definitely foreign, but grounded and sensibly Minnesotan.
It started small. A few early adopters saw the benefits. We used to jokingly refer to class as “Witchcraft Wednesdays” since we were pretty sure that’s what some of the stodgier sorts thought we were up to. Little by little, the class grew and expanded to other times and locations. The growth was organic: word of mouth, neighbors bringing neighbors, family, and friends.
We hit a few snags along the way. Success attracts more students to be sure, but it also attracts some uglier things like greed and petty jealousy. It’s always easier (and for some, more gratifying) to take (or take out) what someone else has built. But karma plays The Long Game. Here we are, still: a community of lifelong learners who support each other, travel around the world together– and laugh a lot! There’s a Japanese proverb that says, to continue is to win. We simply continue…
YogaHotDish is comprehensive–not quickie–yoga. There are no music and mirrors as it’s taught as a meditation-in-motion as it’s the work-in that’s the important part. Yes, you’ll get stronger and more flexible, but that isn’t what will keep you coming back for years.
No experience or flexibility required. Classes are beginner and bro’ friendly. Bring a water bottle, and a mat (if you already have one), and a sense of humor. Blocks, blankets, bolsters, and more are provided.
Beginners Welcome. Newbie? You may want to borrow a mat and see the different options prior to purchase. Note: you must be able to get up and down off the floor w/o assistance. This class is around 50% men and is suitable for all body types. You need not be a dancer or a gymnast!
Yes! You can just show up to start. Showing up is the hardest part, so do that first.
